Mmmm

Jim and I both like our food, well ok me somewhat more than Jim…….mum said my first word was “more” as I pushed my empty bowl forward. How rude! And though I will not deny I cannot resist sweet food when it is in front of me I will rarely go looking for it or stock my kitchen cupboards with sugar and chocolate treats. Olives, capers, smoked oysters, dolmades and dips make a piggy of me. I will share a desert with a friend when dining out but on my own to a cake shop I do not go. It is not self restraint, as I have none, I am just not keen on overly sweet and sickly cakes which is, on the whole, how cakes are made in Oz. Sarah if you’re reading this, the fabulous sponge in Beechworth does not count! Its not sickly and the sourness of the passion fruit icing is the pull!

Cakes in France…..well a whole other story, everyday is a battle not to supplement each meal with superb patisseries. Take the little beauty above, the shortcrust pastry was enough to make an adequate vessel without interfering with the taste of its contents. The small amount of delicate custard was not battling for centre stage, happy to compliment those gorgeous figs who were glazed but not drowned in syrup. It was a piece of heaven which was not at all expensive and easy to come by at the ubiquitous Paul
